The lab is using moss (Physcomitrium patens) as a model to
investigate various developmental biology-related questions
in plants. The lab routinely employs techniques such as
genetic manipulations, protein expression/purification, and
confocal microscopy observation. We encourage those

(1) A PhD degree in Plant Biology/Genetics/Biochemistry or a
related discipline.
(2) A good command of English and capable of acquiring new
skills.
(3) Must be experienced in more than one of the following
techniques: (1) molecular biology (Golden
gate/gateway/Gibson assembly), confocal microscopy (time-
lapse imaging, image analysis), DNA sequencing analysis
(RNAseq, scRNAseq), Biomolecular interactions (in vitro pull-
down, MicroScale Thermophoresis, Isothermal titration
calorimetry).
(4) A good track record of publication that demonstrates the
above.

Two potential research areas are:

1. Giant viruses: evolution of viral gigantism, genome regulation, and virus-host interactions

Giant viruses are DNA viruses with extraordinary genomes that are associated with a wide range of eukaryotic hosts, including animals, fungi, amoebae, algae, and many other microeukaryotes.

2. Phages: evolution of phage resistance and susceptibility and dynamic phage-bacteria interactions

We focus on phages that infect antibiotic-resistant bacteria to study what determines the outcome of phage infection and to apply this knowledge to develop broad-range phages.

4. Experience and knowledge in genomics, bioinformatics, evolutionary biology or microbial ecology

Our institute is part of Academia Sinica, the Taiwanese academy of sciences. The working language in our lab and institute is English. Knowledge in Mandarin or other Taiwanese languages is not required, but foreign researchers are encouraged to take Mandarin classes if they want. Our research team is seeking 1 or 2 master’s-level Research Associates to join us in exploring the evolution, ecology and biology of eukaryotic microbes with key roles on Earth. We focus on the interactions between microbes and their environment and utilize cutting-edge omics and bioinformatics tools to uncover their evolutionary trajectories and regulatory mechanisms. The lab of Ka Wai Ma is inviting application working on plant-microbiota research. The lab is using model system such as Arabidopsis thaliana and the associated culture collection to understand the principles governing plant-microbiota homeostasis. The lab routinely uses omics techniques including amplicon sequencing, transcriptomics and reconstitution system. In addition to general assistance in maintaining the bacterial culture collection, you will work on a project looking at the mechanistic basis of how bacterial microbiota members interfere with the plant immune response.
