Interested in Joining Us?

We offer training in:

  • Career Development
  • For people who are interested in pursuing advanced degrees or working in academia, the work experience in a research lab provides the first step into this exciting and challenging world. For people who are interested in working in industry or pursuing other career paths, the skills developed for solving research problems should be readily transferable.
  • Scientific Methods
  • Working on a research project is one of the best ways to learn about scientific methods. In order to answer the research questions, we use logical reasoning to design experiments and to analyze the results. The ability of applying solid scientific methods to solve problems is important in many professions.
  • English Proficiency
  • Our daily research activities require intensive reading and writing in English (listening and speaking are strongly encouraged). For people whose native language is not English, this experience will help to improve the language proficiency.
  • Bioinformatic Skills
  • Most research projects in our lab involve heavy use of bioinformatic tools. This provides a natural environment to gain knowledge and experience of various information technologies, such as computer programming, database management, and server maintenance.
  • Molecular Biology Skills
  • In addition to computers, we also use a variety of molecular biology tools in our experiments. These skills will be useful for people who are interested in pursuing a career related to molecular biology.

We emphasize these qualities:

  • Integrity
  • Being honest and responsible for one's actions are some of the non-negotiable requirements in any work environment.
  • Passion
  • Life is full of possibilities. If going to work does not seem exciting (at least some of the times), perhaps one should find something else that is more interesting to do.
  • Curiosity
  • Scientific research is all about making new discoveries. The determination to find out the answers and the ability to adapt to new tools are both indispensable when new findings take the research projects to some unexpected directions.
  • Confidence
  • A major part of scientific training is to nurture independent thinking. For this to work, having the confidence to make judgment calls when necessary is a must.
  • Cooperativeness
  • Because most scientific endeavors require team efforts, the ability and willingness to work with other people are essential.

In general, contact the principal investigator ahead of time is a good idea to make a plan that works for everyone. Please briefly describe the following points in the inquiry email:

  • Your background.
  • Why are you interested in joining our lab?
  • What do you want to get out of this experience?
  • Your future career goals.
  • The name and contact information of at least one referee.
  • Other relevant information.

Research Assistants

We have openings for research assistants from time to time and will advertise these positions when they become available. If you are interested in such possibility, contact the principal investigator ahead of time even if there is no opening posted.

Graduate Students

We accept Ph.D. students through the following programs:

Undergraduate Student

We welcome undergraduate students to join our lab as a part of our efforts to contribute to the science education in Taiwan. Students who are interested in such oppurtunity should apply to the IPMB Summer Undergraduate Intern Program. A one-day tour of IPMB is usually arranged in January/February and the application for internship is usually in March.
